Feeding America: Suggestion Four

Due to a late night last night,  suggestion four had to wait until this morning.  Thanks to @buttercupd for the suggestion. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, where most of us spend a lot of time with a lot of food and a lot of family, let's talk about an organization which has a name that defines its focus- Feeding America.

From their website:

Feeding America is the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity.  Our mission is to feed America's hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger.
Each year, the Feeding America network provides food to more than 37 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including 14 million children and nearly 3 million seniors.
Our network of more than 200 food banks serves all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, securing and distributing more than 2.5 billion pounds of food and grocery products annually. Those member food banks support approximately 61,000 local charitable agencies and 70,000 programs, which provide food directly to individuals and families in need.

Did you know that 1 in 6 Americans deal with hunger? I mean, that's a number that is seriously hard for me to think about.  We live in a culture where the financially secure and wealthy are the "faces of America". The poor in this country are so well hidden that we often forget poverty exists here.  Poverty is a way of life in countries like Ethiopia, Colombia and Mexico- the rich are the exception to the rule. But here, real poverty- the kind where children not sure whether or not they will get their next meal- that's not something we recognize every day.

And your money seems to go far with Feeding America- every $1 = 7 meals. That's pretty significant, don't you think- considering that $1 barely buys me an iced tea these days.

So what do you think? Should the money from me not eating out go to Feeding America? Remember 1 comment = 1 vote. And please leave your name, initials or twitter handle when you sign.
